Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Yes, tourists require a visa to enter Sri Lanka, which can be applied for either online or upon arrival at the airport.

Generally, standard vaccinations (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella) and hepatitis A are recommended. Depending on your route and type of travel, vaccinations against typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis may also be advisable. Please consult your family doctor or a tropical medicine specialist well in advance of your trip for individual advice.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate influenced by two monsoon seasons. The best time to travel depends on which regions you want to visit:

West and south coast and the central highlands: Ideal travel time is from December to March .

East and North Coast: The ideal travel time is from May to September . Generally, you can travel to Sri Lanka year-round by adjusting your itinerary to the respective dry season.

Respectful behavior is essential in religious sites:

Clothing: Shoulders and knees should be covered. Shorts, skirts, or sleeveless tops are not appropriate.

Shoes: Shoes must be removed before entering. Socks are permitted.

Behavior: Be quiet, respectful, and avoid loud talking or laughing. Do not turn your back on Buddha statues when taking photos.

Money: A small donation upon leaving is customary but not mandatory.

What currency is used in Sri Lanka, and can I pay with a credit card?

The official currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) . Smaller amounts and purchases at local markets are usually paid in cash. Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard) are widely accepted in larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas. It is advisable to always carry some cash with you, especially outside of major cities.

Type D and G sockets are used in Sri Lanka. The standard is 230 V at 50 Hz. It’s advisable to bring a universal adapter to ensure you can charge all your electronic devices.

Yes, mosquitoes are common in Sri Lanka, especially in the evenings and in humid areas. For protection, we recommend:

Use a good mosquito repellent (containing DEET or icaridin). Wear long sleeves and pants, especially at dusk. Sleep under a mosquito net if not in air-conditioned rooms. Avoid standing water.
